National Urban League Report Slams Trump Civil Rights Rollbacks

The National Urban League released its 50th annual State of Black America report on Thursday, July 30, 2026, concluding that the American dream is more inaccessible to Black citizens than at any time since the Civil Rights Movement. The report asserts that the administration of Donald Trump has exacerbated economic turmoil and diminished political prospects for Black Americans through a series of policy rollbacks.

Specific grievances include the overhaul of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the promotion of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. The report highlights a shift in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which has pivoted from addressing workplace discrimination to investigating companies for anti-white racism. This shift, combined with an executive order banning illegal DEI initiatives, has led corporations and universities to shutter diversity departments. The organization also links these policies to rising federal student loan defaults and credit card delinquencies.

Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, characterized the administration's actions as a campaign of coercion and oppression. Maryland Governor Wes Moore contributed an essay to the report focusing on the racial wealth gap. In response, White House spokesperson Allison Schuster defended the administration, stating that President Trump was elected with a mandate to reverse diversity, equity, and inclusion policies from the Joe Biden administration, which she described as destructive and inefficient.
