DHS Reports Lowest Annual Border Crossings in U.S. History
The Department of Homeland Security reports a 95 percent drop in southern border apprehensions for Fiscal Year 2026, citing strong enforcement and new wall construction.
The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that preliminary Fiscal Year 2026 data show the lowest annual number of border crossings in United States history. Southern border apprehensions fell to 98,708, a 95 percent decrease from previous levels. DHS reported that FY 2026 was the first fiscal year with zero Border Patrol releases, following 17 consecutive months with no releases.
Donald Trump is credited by administration officials for these results through a policy of strong enforcement. Since January 2025, the administration has constructed 250 miles of new border wall. This effort was supported by $34.3 billion in funding for Smart Wall construction between September 2025 and September 2026.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullen stated that the data proves the president delivered on his promise of a secure border, asserting that the results show strong enforcement works.
