Kaduna Governor Reports 49 Percent Surge in National Tax Revenue

Governor Uba Sani announced that Nigeria's national tax revenue reached approximately 21.6 trillion naira in the first half of 2026, marking a 49 percent increase over the previous year. Speaking at the 160th Joint Revenue Board meeting in Kaduna, Sani attributed the growth to reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, including legislation that transformed the Joint Tax Board into the Joint Revenue Board to simplify the tax environment and reduce overlapping taxation.

Sani highlighted the success of the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service, which increased the state's monthly internally generated revenue from 4 billion naira to 10 billion naira through technology-driven collection. He argued that sustainable taxation must rely on fairness and transparency rather than coercion to encourage voluntary compliance.

Following the revenue announcement, Sani met with Dr. John Nwabueze, Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, to pledge support for the agency's mediation services. The collaboration aims to align Kaduna's tax administration with national reforms to protect taxpayer rights and increase investor confidence. Nwabueze stated that independent mechanisms to resolve grievances are essential for increasing Nigeria's tax-to-GDP growth.
