Ukrainian Communities Mark 35th Independence Anniversary Globally

Ukrainian communities in Australia and Canada held large-scale commemorations to mark 35 years of independence from the Soviet Union. In Australia, festivals and rallies took place in every major city, including a march across Bondi Beach in Sydney and a rally at Federation Square in Melbourne. The events featured keynote speaker Lieutenant Viktoriia Savkiv, a combat medic and drone platoon commander. Community leaders urged the Australian government to provide more military aid and close a fuel sanctions loophole that they claim has provided over $2.5 billion to the Kremlin.

In Canada, the London Ukrainian Centre hosted the second annual London Ukrainian Festival at Harris Park in Ontario. The event served as a cultural hub for newcomers and established residents through traditional music and crafts. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre attended the opening ceremony, pledging Canada's continued support for Ukraine. This occurred as Canada has provided over $25.5 billion in assistance since 2022 and welcomed more than 300,000 Ukrainians via emergency travel programs.

The celebrations took place against a backdrop of continued conflict as the war enters its fifth year. Recent Russian drone strikes on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih killed civilians and injured more than 100 people. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected calls to hold elections while the war continues.
