Donald Trump Reverses Biden-Era Fuel Economy Standards

President Donald Trump approved new fuel economy standards on Saturday, reversing the stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules established under former President Joe Biden. The previous policies required automakers to increase fuel efficiency for passenger cars and light trucks to approximately 50 miles per gallon by 2031 to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles.

Trump characterized the rollback as a measure to reduce manufacturing waste and lower vehicle prices for consumers. While the final standards have not been publicly detailed, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated they would be significantly lower than the previous requirements.

This regulatory shift allows automakers to produce more profitable, less fuel-efficient vehicles, such as SUVs and pickup trucks, which reduces the immediate incentive for electric vehicle production. Despite the policy change, some manufacturers, including General Motors, intend to continue producing electric vehicles.
