Nvidia Faces Stress Test as AI Credit Markets Tighten
Nvidia is managing growing financial risks after providing billions in guarantees to AI partners facing tightening credit markets and falling share prices.
Nvidia is facing a stress test of its strategy to act as a financier for the global AI buildout as credit markets tighten for its partners. To accelerate the adoption of its hardware, the company has provided extensive financial backstops and guarantees to AI model developers and neocloud providers to lower their interest rates. These commitments include a guarantee of up to $105 billion for an OpenAI data center in Ohio and $36 billion in off-balance-sheet agreements for neoclouds.
Recent market volatility has pressured several portfolio companies. CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN have seen their shares drop by at least 30% this month, while the Australian AI cloud provider Firmus withdrew its IPO plans. CoreWeave has also seen its credit default swap spreads soar past 11%.
CEO Jensen Huang maintains that demand for neoclouds remains high, attributing the current struggles to a scarcity of working capital rather than a lack of demand. As off-balance-sheet liabilities grow, Nvidia is currently seeking insurers to help mitigate the risk of potential GPU value loss.
