Andy Burnham Unveils First Budget With Defense Spending Hike

Prime Minister Andy Burnham delivered the government's first budget, increasing defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030 and raising taxes on banks and gambling.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey delivered the government's first budget this week, prioritizing economic stability and military readiness amid global turmoil and a conflict between the United States and Iran. The budget closes a £4.7 billion funding gap in the Defense Investment Plan and commits to increasing defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030, with a long-term NATO target of 3.5% by 2035.

To fund household support, including £100 in energy bill relief, the government increased taxes on banks and gambling. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting defended the pace of these military funding increases.

Burnham acknowledged that the budget was not as radical as he had hoped, citing global volatility and constraints within the Labour manifesto. He also adjusted his timeline for the next general election, stating there will be no election in 2027, though he had previously indicated one would not occur until 2029.
