US Releases Emergency Oil Reserves to Lower Heating Costs

The United States Department of Energy is loaning 315,000 barrels of emergency heating oil to combat surging fuel prices ahead of November elections.

The United States Department of Energy announced on October 21 that the Trump administration will loan up to 315,000 barrels of emergency heating oil to lower consumer prices. The release represents nearly one-third of the 1-million-barrel emergency reserve and targets diesel prices that have exceeded $6.50 per gallon due to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.

Fuel will be drawn from reserves in Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, with deliveries expected by November 13. This action follows pressure from bipartisan senators and occurs shortly before the November 3 elections, where energy costs are a critical issue in several contested Senate races. The government has also loaned 172 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to address rising crude oil prices.

In a separate energy move, the federal government released $42 million in Defense Production Act funding to support the Williams Companies' Constitution natural gas pipeline. This funding proceeds despite environmental blocks from New York. The pipeline project aims to transport natural gas from Pennsylvania.
