Trump Seeks $88 Billion to Sustain Escalating War in Iran

The Donald Trump administration is seeking between $67 billion and $87.6 billion in supplemental emergency funding to sustain the U.S. war in Iran, warning that munitions and operational reserves could be depleted by mid-August. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee on July 21 and 22, stating the conflict has cost $37.5 billion to date, an $8 billion increase from May estimates. The request is part of a broader $95 billion GOP budget package and a proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget intended to ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.

The conflict has escalated following the collapse of a June 17 ceasefire, with U.S. forces bombing Iran for ten consecutive nights ending July 21. Total U.S. casualties have risen to 18 dead and over 100 injured, including recent losses in Jordan and Iraq. In response to Iranian strikes on U.S. assets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, President Trump has threatened bunker-busting attacks on the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility and strikes on Iranian energy plants and bridges.

Congressional reception is deeply divided. While House Republicans are advancing the funding via reconciliation, Senate Democrats and some conservatives have criticized the lack of spending offsets and the absence of a clear exit strategy. Lawmakers questioned Hegseth on the accuracy of previous claims that Iran's military was combat ineffective and criticized the administration for withholding casualty numbers. Despite the legislative deadlock and public opposition, the administration maintains that Iran is at its weakest military point in decades and has reimposed a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
