Pardoned Juan Orlando Hernandez Returns to Honduras Facing Corruption Charges

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez returned to Honduras on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after being released from a U.S. federal prison. Hernandez had been sentenced to 45 years for his role in a massive cocaine trafficking conspiracy, which the United States Department of Justice described as one of the world's largest and most violent. He was pardoned in December by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed the original trial was a setup by the Joe Biden administration and that Hernandez was "treated very harshly and unfairly."

Hernandez arrived at Palmerola International Airport via private flight, where he was greeted by family and members of his National Party. Despite the American pardon, he remains a subject of legal action in his home country. He faces fraud and money laundering charges in the Pandora I and Pandora II corruption cases, which allege the diversion of state funds and the use of shell companies to illegally fund political campaigns.

A Honduran judge suspended his arrest warrant and Interpol red notice in June, allowing him to enter the country without immediate detention. He is scheduled for arraignment on August 3. The pardon has drawn scrutiny for its contrast with the January 2026 U.S. abduction and prosecution of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on similar narcotics charges. Meanwhile, former prosecutors and legal experts have expressed concern that the return of the National Party to the presidency under Nasry Asfura will result in impunity for Hernandez.
