Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refineries and Military Bases as Aerial War Escalates
Ukraine hit Russian energy and military sites in Moscow and Crimea, then both sides exchanged massive drone barrages with hundreds of UAVs launched.
Ukrainian forces executed a series of coordinated strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure beginning May 17, 2026, followed by a massive aerial exchange on May 20 that marked a sharp escalation in the conflict. The Security Service of Ukraine and Defence Forces launched high-precision strikes on the Angstrom semiconductor plant, the Moscow Oil Refinery, and two oil pumping stations in the Moscow region, while simultaneously hitting the Belbek military airfield in Crimea, destroying a Pantsir-S2 air defence system, an S-400 radar hangar, UAV control systems, and the airfield control tower. SSU Acting Head Yevheniy Khmara stated the operations aim to weaken Russia's military potential and disrupt oil logistics sustaining the war. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy set the tasks for these special operations.
On May 20, the conflict intensified with large-scale aerial attacks from both sides. Russia launched 154 drones and an Iskander-M ballistic missile from its Rostov region at Ukrainian targets. Ukraine's Air Force reported neutralizing 131 drones and the missile, though one ballistic missile and 23 strike drones hit 20 locations across Ukraine. Russia stated it targeted Ukrainian fuel and energy infrastructure, ammunition depots, and drone assembly plants. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its air defenses shot down 780 Ukrainian drones and four guided bombs in 24 hours, and reported approximately 990 Ukrainian personnel casualties plus losses of a Leopard tank, a Gepard anti-aircraft system, and two Paladin artillery systems.
Simultaneously, Ukraine launched its own coordinated precision wave on May 20. A primary target was the Lukoil-Nizhegorodorgsintez refinery in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod region, where a strike on the AVT-6 primary oil refining unit caused a large fire — the second attack on that facility within 48 hours. Ukrainian forces also damaged four storage tanks at the Yaroslavl-3 oil pumping station in Semibratovo. The Ukrainian General Staff reported neutralizing high-level command centers in Soledar, Ivanivske, and Liubymivka, along with drone command posts and troop concentrations across Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kursk regions. The General Staff stated these operations aim to degrade Russia's logistical backbone and disrupt front-line supply chains.
