Iran Keeps Strait of Hormuz Closed Pending US Commitments

Iran maintains the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until the United States lifts oil sanctions and unfreezes assets, while Qatar leads diplomatic efforts to restore navigation.

Top Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States fulfills commitments outlined in a memorandum of understanding. Iran is demanding the removal of a naval blockade, the lifting of oil sanctions, and the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad.

Qatar is currently leading regional diplomatic efforts to reopen the waterway and facilitate a return to the memorandum of understanding. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar stated that a ceasefire and the restoration of freedom of navigation are essential prerequisites for resuming negotiations.

Parallel to these diplomatic efforts, Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on a map for a new maritime traffic route through the waterway. Iranian officials indicated that this arrangement is expected to be finalized as a package that includes a joint statement.
