Dauda Lawal Challenges Nyesom Wike Over Tinubu Re-election Strategy

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike announced plans to lead the re-election campaign for President Bola Tinubu in Abuja and Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a road project inspection in Abuja on September 25, 2026, Wike stated that the administration's infrastructure delivery serves as the primary campaign strategy, claiming that visible governance will translate directly into votes.

This announcement triggered a confrontation with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who challenged Wike during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Lawal demanded that Wike either formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) or withdraw from the Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party platform Wike created to mobilize support for Tinubu without requiring members to abandon their own political parties.

Lawal, aligning with the Progressive Governors Forum, argued that Wike cannot support the president while simultaneously backing candidates from other parties, such as the Peoples Democratic Party, in governorship and legislative races. Wike defended the coalition as a multi-party tool, citing the 2023 election as a precedent for split-ticket support. Lawal stated he intends to discuss Wike's political allegiance with President Tinubu upon the president's return from France to establish a clear line of loyalty.
