Haitian Immigrants in Ohio Fitted With Ankle Monitors
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fitted Haitian immigrants in Ohio with ankle monitors following the termination of Temporary Protected Status.
The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began fitting Haitian immigrants in Ohio with ankle monitors on August 2, 2026. The actions took place at an Enforcement and Removal Operations field office in Blue Ash after the Department of Homeland Security issued call-in letters to residents.
One resident, Sony Prenice, stated she was forced to choose between the electronic monitor, which limits her movement to a 75-mile radius, or self-deportation requiring a $2,600 payment. These enforcement measures follow a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allowed the administration of Donald Trump to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians in November 2025. The policy shift affects approximately 15,000 Haitians residing in Springfield, Ohio.
About 550 people protested outside the ICE office to demand the restoration of TPS. Viles Dorsainvil of the Haitian Community Help and Support Center criticized the monitors as being reminiscent of slavery and argued that migration to the U.S. is a result of failed foreign policies in Haiti.
