Claudia Sheinbaum Denounces ICE Deaths and Trump Immigration Orders
President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the deaths of 17 Mexican citizens and rejected Donald Trump's order to resume immigration detentions.
President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the deaths of 17 Mexican citizens during operations by or in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Speaking from the National Palace, Sheinbaum called for an end to ICE raids and criticized Mexican opposition parties for not supporting the government's response to these human rights violations.
The Mexican government has filed complaints with U.S. state prosecutors to investigate the fatalities, including a Mexican national who died after being struck by a truck while fleeing an immigration operation. Migrant rights activists are further urging Mexico to pursue legal action against private companies operating ICE detention centers.
On July 16, Sheinbaum rejected a recent order by U.S. President Donald Trump to resume immigration detentions during traffic stops. She argued that irregular immigration status should not be treated as a crime, distinguishing between individuals with criminal records and those with administrative issues. Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco has since communicated Mexico's legal positions to U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson and officials at the State Department.
