Trump Seeks to Nationalize Election Administration Amid Interference Claims

Donald Trump is escalating efforts to nationalize and reshape U.S. election administration ahead of the 2026 midterms. In a primetime address on July 16, the president claimed U.S. voting systems are unsafe and released declassified documents alleging that Chinese entities acquired American voter information for influence campaigns. Despite these claims, Trump later told reporters he was not inclined to impose consequences on China.

To facilitate this shift, the administration has fired the commissioners of the Election Assistance Commission and reduced the footprint of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Simultaneously, the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security have attempted to seize sensitive voter data from states, including West Virginia. Federal officials threatened state election officers with penalties or prison for non-compliance, though courts have blocked several of these attempts.

Critics, including Senator Mark Warner, describe these actions as baseless attempts to erode public faith in democratic processes. Parallel tensions are rising at the state level in North Carolina, where Republican lawmakers shifted the appointment power for the State Board of Elections to the State Auditor. This transition led to allegations that elections liaison Brad Woodhouse attempted to interfere with early voting sites in Jackson and Pasquotank counties before his reassignment.
