Russia Arrests German National as US Teacher Returns Home
Russia's Federal Security Service arrested a German national for alleged mercenary activity while releasing a detained American teacher following sanctions relief.
The Federal Security Service of Russia arrested a German national on October 21, 2026, accusing him of serving as a mercenary sniper for the Ukrainian armed forces. According to the FSB, the man is a former Bundeswehr soldier with experience in Afghanistan and Somalia who allegedly fought in Ukraine between 2016 and 2018, and again in the Donetsk region in 2025 before deserting over unpaid wages.
The German Foreign Ministry acknowledged the reports of the arrest but declined to provide specific details regarding the case.
On the same day, Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a retired American teacher who had been detained since 2024 on similar mercenary charges. President Donald Trump stated that the release of Hubbard was linked to the easing of sanctions on Russian diesel shipments.
