China and Bangladesh Establish Shared Future Community and Economic Corridor
President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman agreed to create a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor and a shared future community during a high-level summit in Beijing.
President Xi Jinping and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced the establishment of a China-Bangladesh community with a shared future during Rahman's official visit to Beijing on June 26, 2026. The leaders signed 13 memoranda of understanding covering trade, investment, and education, and agreed to a 2+2 dialogue mechanism for foreign affairs and defense.
A central outcome of the summit is the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor, which would link Kunming, China, through Myanmar to Chittagong and Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh. This project, part of the Belt and Road Initiative, aims to enhance regional connectivity and provide China with direct access to the Indian Ocean. The two nations also signed a pact on the Mongla Port Economic Zone and agreed to develop Chittagong port as a regional business hub.
China further pledged support for the comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation of the Teesta River and offered humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugee repatriation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China stated that these initiatives do not target third parties, a remark addressing potential regional tensions with India. India's Ministry of External Affairs maintained that water-sharing issues are managed via existing bilateral mechanisms, while Indian officials asserted that New Delhi's relationship with Bangladesh remains independent of third-party influences.
Additionally, China welcomed Bangladesh's future application for BRICS membership. Prime Minister Rahman reaffirmed Bangladesh's adherence to the one-China principle and sought cooperation in artificial intelligence, the digital economy, and the prioritization of Mandarin language studies in Bangladeshi schools.
