Trump Imposes 50 Percent Tariff on Canadian Outerwear

President Donald Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods, including overcoats, windbreakers, and anoraks. The president claimed the move was a response to unfair levies Canada had placed on American products.

The tariffs specifically target the luxury outerwear sector, impacting brands such as Canada Goose, Moose Knuckles, and Arc'teryx that rely on domestic manufacturing in Ontario and Quebec. Because the United States serves as the largest market for these goods, companies have limited options to relocate production to avoid the costs.

Canada Goose, the largest luxury outerwear firm in the country, reported that the tariffs could reduce its operating margin by less than 2 percent this year without mitigation. While some retailers increased U.S. inventory during August trade negotiations to soften the blow, the industry now faces higher costs entering the holiday shopping season. Dani Reiss, Chief Executive of Canada Goose, stated that the company will remain steady and continue to deliver products during this period of uncertainty.
