Marie-France van Heel Establishes Active Diplomatic Role as PM Spouse

Marie-France van Heel is utilizing a political adviser to promote British interests domestically and overseas while supporting Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Marie-France van Heel, wife of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, is establishing a more politically engaged role than previous prime ministerial spouses. A former senior marketing executive, Marie-France van Heel resigned as chief customer officer of the electric vehicle-charging network Be.EV to focus on her new role, though she remains on the company's board.

To support her efforts, van Heel hired a political adviser, formerly a special adviser to a cabinet member, to help her promote British interests both at home and abroad. She recently accompanied the Prime Minister to the UN General Assembly in New York, where she met with the first ladies of the United States and Ukraine, as well as the spouse of the Canadian prime minister.

As the United Kingdom prepares for the G20 and G7 presidencies, van Heel is expected to serve as a key component of the country's diplomatic strategy and champion various charitable causes. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has described his wife as plain-speaking, noting that he has been on the receiving end of that directness over the years.
