UN Chief Urges Permanent Gaza Cease-fire Amid High Casualties
Antonio Guterres called for a permanent cease-fire and the implementation of a comprehensive peace plan as Gaza casualties exceed 74,200.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on October 6, 2026, that the existing Gaza cease-fire has failed to provide stability, security, or adequate humanitarian relief. Speaking ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7 incursion, Guterres urged all parties to commit to the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict to transition the current truce into a permanent peace.
Guterres condemned the initial Hamas incursion that killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, while highlighting the massive loss of life and destruction faced by Palestinians. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israel's war has killed over 74,200 people, with 1,454 Palestinians killed since the cease-fire took effect on October 10, 2025.
Tensions remain high as the Cabinet of Israel refuses to withdraw troops until the disarmament of Hamas is verified. Conversely, Hamas advocates for a gradual disarmament process.
