Nvidia and S&P Project Trillions in AI Infrastructure Spending

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and S&P Global Ratings project massive increases in data center spending through 2030, while analysts warn of hidden debt obligations.

Industry leaders and credit analysts project a massive surge in global AI infrastructure investment through 2030. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, reaffirmed a projection that annual global data center capital expenditures will reach between $3 trillion and $4 trillion by 2030. This represents a potential tripling or quadrupling of current annual spending, which is estimated at $1 trillion this year.

S&P Global Ratings provides a similar long-term outlook, projecting that major hyperscalers—including Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, and SpaceX—could invest over $7 trillion in AI and data centers between 2025 and 2030. The agency expects capital spending to exceed $1.3 trillion by 2027, though it anticipates these companies will experience negative free operating cash flow through that period.

Despite the growth, Mark Habib of S&P Global Ratings warned that the true extent of this financial exposure may be obscured. He noted that the use of joint ventures, special-purpose vehicles, and residual-value guarantees can hide debt obligations from standard credit analysis. While S&P has not yet issued rating changes, the agency continues to monitor how these firms convert their massive spending into sustainable revenue.
