Ford Launches Fathom Budget Electric Truck to Rival Chinese EVs

Ford Motor Company announced the Fathom, a midsize electric pickup truck starting at $28,350, which rises to $29,945 including shipping and delivery fees. The five-passenger vehicle is the first product of the company's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which was developed by Tesla veterans in California to be lighter and more efficient. The Fathom is the result of a secret "Skunkworks" program launched in 2022 and will be produced using a new "assembly tree" manufacturing process at the Louisville Assembly Plant.

This strategic shift follows a $19.5 billion charge Ford took in December to overhaul its electric vehicle business, a process that included the cancellation of the F-150 Lightning. The Fathom aims to maintain competitiveness against low-cost global leaders and Chinese manufacturers such as BYD Company. It will feature Blue Cruise driver-assist technology and represent the first Ford vehicle with Apple software and maps integration.

The Fathom enters a market with uncertain demand after the administration of Donald Trump removed $7,500 consumer tax credits for electric vehicles. Pre-orders for the truck are scheduled to begin in early 2027, with customer deliveries following later that year.
