Japan Links Military Buildup to National Economic Growth

The Government of Japan released its annual defense white paper, presenting an accelerating military buildup as a strategic tool to stimulate economic growth and national prosperity. The document outlines a plan to integrate commercial components into weapons production and fund startups to ensure that defense spending benefits the wider economy. This approach aligns with the state spending strategies of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The white paper identifies the military activities of China as the nation's greatest strategic challenge and emphasizes the necessity of deterring conflict over Taiwan. Prime Minister Takaichi has previously stated that Japan could deploy its Self-Defense Forces if a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatened the survival of the Japanese state.

To support these goals, Japan has increased its defense spending to 2% of its gross domestic product. Current priorities focus on the acquisition of unmanned weapons, such as drones, and the development of long-range missiles.
