Trump-Endorsed Challengers Oust Five Indiana Republican State Senators

President Donald Trump successfully purged five of seven targeted Republican state senators in Indiana during the May 5, 2026, primary elections. The campaign served as political retribution after 21 Republican senators joined Democrats in December 2025 to block a mid-decade redistricting plan that aimed to flip Democratic seats to Republican control.

Trump and his allies, including Governor Mike Braun and U.S. Senator Jim Banks, spent between $8.3 million and $13.5 million on attack ads and mailers. Funding was driven by groups such as the Club for Growth, Turning Point USA, and PACs like Hoosier Leadership for America. Defeated incumbents included Travis Holdman, Jim Buck, Linda Rogers, Dan Dernulc, and Greg Walker. Senator Greg Goode survived his challenge, while the race for Senator Spencer Deery remained undecided by a razor-thin margin.

Ousted senators described the surge of national funding as an unprecedented attempt by Washington to dictate state-level decisions through dark money and intimidation. Conversely, Trump allies characterized the results as a victory for America First conservatives and a warning to other GOP dissenters. The outcome is expected to facilitate the passage of the contested redistricting maps when the legislature reconvenes next year.

Following the Indiana results, Trump has expanded his retribution efforts to other states. He has endorsed primary challengers against U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy in Louisiana and U.S. Representative Thomas Massie in Kentucky, while also criticizing Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
