Jack Smith Warns of Trump Attack on Rule of Law

Former special counsel Jack Smith stated in media interviews that the United States is facing an attack on the rule of law under the administration of President Donald Trump. Smith characterized the situation as different in kind and scope from anything he has witnessed in his lifetime, citing the demonization of public servants and the pursuit of retribution prosecutions against figures such as former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Smith argued that the Department of Justice has jettisoned expertise and replaced career prosecutors with political appointments, rendering the agency ineffective and diminishing its capacity to protect national security. He warned of a cascading effect in which federal judges can no longer trust prosecutors, thereby hindering the government's ability to represent the American people in court.

Additionally, Smith criticized the pardons of January 6 Capitol rioters for encouraging recidivism and noted that the administration targeted his own legal team by stripping their security clearances. He expressed concern over the integrity of the upcoming midterm elections and suggested that he himself remains a potential target for indictment due to the president's animus toward him.
