Trump Proposes Eliminating Chemical Safety Board and Cutting OSHA Budget

President Donald Trump proposes eliminating the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board and cutting budgets for OSHA and the federal mine safety agency.

Donald Trump has proposed eliminating funding for the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), a federal agency responsible for investigating the root causes of industrial chemical disasters. The White House argues that the CSB duplicates the work of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, asserting that its removal would reduce the size of the federal government.

This proposal comes shortly after a chemical leak at the Ames Goldsmith plant in Kanawha County, West Virginia, which killed two workers and injured dozens. Alongside the elimination of the CSB, the administration has proposed a 7.5% budget cut to OSHA and a 10% cut to the federal mine safety agency.

Former board members and worker advocates warn that dismantling the agency would leave industrial regions, particularly West Virginia, more vulnerable to preventable disasters. They emphasize that while OSHA and the EPA focus on regulatory enforcement and violations, the CSB focuses on preventative safety recommendations and identifying root causes that may not be covered by existing regulations.
