Nigerian Army Colonel Admits Plot to Overthrow President Tinubu

Nigerian Army Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji admitted to leading a conspiracy to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. The plot originated in 2023 during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari but was revived in 2024 after Ma’aji failed two bids for promotion to brigadier general. Ma’aji stated the operation was in the mobilization phase, aimed at recruiting like-minded officers, and had not yet set a date for execution.

Security forces uncovered the plot in September 2025, leading to the arrest of approximately 40 individuals, including serving and retired military officers and civilians. In response, the government cancelled the October 1 Independence Day parade and sacked Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa. While Ma’aji and other serving officers face court-martial, civilians and retired officers are being tried in civil court.

Ma’aji attributed his actions to patriotism and frustration over poor governance, insecurity, and the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal and electricity tariff hikes. He specifically cited his struggle to raise five children on a meagre salary and inadequate care for wounded soldiers at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital. Ma’aji alleged that former Governor Timipre Sylva provided 400 million naira to finance the effort, a claim Sylva has denied. Ma’aji has since apologized and appealed for leniency and a pardon.
