Louisiana Lowers Flags to Honor Dolly Parton

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order on Thursday, August 27, directing flags over the State Capitol and all state buildings to fly at half-staff. The order honors Dolly Parton, the country music icon and philanthropist who died Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer.

President Donald Trump issued a similar order for American flags shortly after Parton's death. Governor Landry highlighted Parton's specific connections to Louisiana, noting that she filmed Steel Magnolias in Natchitoches and recorded her first single in Lake Charles.

Landry also cited the influence of Parton's Imagination Library. Since the state chapter launched in 2023, the program has provided 419,000 books to underprivileged children across Louisiana.
