Israel Strikes Syrian Airbase to Block Turkish Military Buildup

Israeli aircraft launched eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Idlib, Syria, on August 18, 2026, targeting the runway and storage facilities. Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials justified the operation as a necessary deterrent to prevent Turkish troops from establishing a military foothold south of Aleppo. Israel claimed the deployment would violate a security status quo and threaten its strategic air routes and national security.

Turkiye and the Syrian government both rejected these claims as frivolous and untenable. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani acknowledged that Turkish officers had visited the base for training and expertise exchange but denied any plans for a permanent military presence. The United States, through Special Envoy Tom Barrack, described the strikes as an unnecessary escalation. Barrack later stated that U.S. intelligence found Israel's claims regarding Turkish troop movements to be untrue, suggesting the strike may have been a political move ahead of Israel's October elections.

International reactions were sharply critical, with a joint statement from 12 countries, including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, condemning the strikes as violations of Syrian sovereignty. Tensions further escalated as Turkiye requested Interpol red notices for Netanyahu. In response to the risk of military miscalculation, the United States is working to establish a deconfliction mechanism between Israel, Turkiye, and Syria. Separately, the Israeli Defense Forces conducted a drone strike on August 22 in Beit Jinn, Syria, targeting a militant preparing an attack against Israeli soldiers.
