UK Government Launches Consultation on National E-Bike Standards
The UK Department for Transport is proposing national standards for shared e-bike schemes to curb antisocial behavior and unify parking regulations across cities.
The UK Department for Transport is launching a national consultation to establish unified standards for shared e-bike schemes. The initiative seeks to end a period of inconsistent local agreements, which officials have described as a "wild west" of pavement parking and antisocial behavior. The proposed rules would standardize parking bays, fleet sizes, and insurance requirements for operators while addressing illegal riding, including drunk operation and red-light jumping.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the government is taking action to give local leaders the power to stop nuisance parking and make journeys safer. Under the plan, councils and mayors would gain more control over rental fees, and operators would be required to share data to improve transport planning.
In London, the government intends to devolve power to the Mayor and Transport for London to unify regulations that currently vary by borough. Mayor Sadiq Khan welcomed the plans, noting that he has sought powers to manage dockless schemes since 2017. Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham also supported the move, calling it an important everyday fix to make streets safer.
