Vladimir Putin Observes Center-2026 Military Exercises in Russia
Vladimir Putin inspected the final phase of the Center-2026 military exercises involving 47,000 troops and several non-Western partners in the Chelyabinsk region.
President Vladimir Putin observed the final stage of the Center-2026 strategic command-and-staff exercises on October 2, 2026, at the Chebarkul training ground in the Chelyabinsk region. The week-long maneuvers, which ran from September 28 to October 3, involved approximately 47,000 troops and 600 pieces of equipment across 11 firing ranges and the Caspian Sea. The drills simulated an offensive operation to liberate occupied territory and establish a security zone in a Central Asian republic, incorporating lessons from the conflict in Ukraine.
During the visit, Putin inspected various weapons systems, including jet-powered Geran drones. The exercises were conducted in parallel with the Interaction-2026 command post exercise, held while Russia chairs the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Participating contingents included military personnel from China, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan, with operational groups from Kazakhstan and the Republic of the Congo and observers from 55 nations.
The maneuvers served as a demonstration of Russia's strategic coordination with non-Western partners amid sanctions and tensions with NATO. The event occurred one day after the Russian government warned NATO that it would use nuclear weapons to defend the Kaliningrad exclave if the military bloc attempted to isolate it from the rest of the country.
