Canada Invests $258 Million to Solve Skilled Labor Shortages

Minister Patty Hajdu announced $258.6 million in workforce funding to address labor shortages and support a national strategy for home retrofits and electricity expansion.

Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu announced an investment of up to $258.6 million over five years through the Sectoral Workforce Innovation Fund to address critical skilled labor shortages across Canada. Speaking in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Hajdu linked these funds to a broader federal strategy to modernize the economy and reduce emissions.

The workforce initiative complements a $2 billion investment announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney to support one million home retrofits. This retrofit program aims to lower energy costs for families and reduce emissions by more than 25 megatons. Additionally, the government is utilizing the Team Canada Strong program, an $8 billion initiative designed to recruit and train 100,000 Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2030-31.

To support these goals, the government is implementing the National Heat Pump Rebate program and the Powering Canada Strong national electricity strategy. The electricity strategy seeks to double the capacity of the national grid by 2050. Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature Julie Dabrusin stated that leveraging clean electricity will lower costs and cut pollution for future generations.
