Trump Administration Targets Effective Altruism Over AI Safety

President Donald Trump and his administration have launched a public campaign against the philosophy of effective altruism, arguing that its focus on AI safety hinders American technological dominance. On Monday, Trump dismissed concerns that advanced artificial intelligence could threaten humanity as a "hoax."

This stance is echoed across the administration. The United States Department of Defense posted "Americanism, not effective altruism" on X, while advisor David Sacks accused groups linked to the movement of creating a "Doomer Industrial Complex" that risks ceding technological ground to China. Vice President JD Vance added that industry calls for regulation might be a "Trojan horse" intended to burden smaller competitors.

The administration's rhetoric contrasts with warnings from AI leaders, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who have called for slowing the development of advanced models until safety measures are established. Effective altruism has historically funded significant AI alignment research, though the movement has faced reputational damage following the fraud conviction of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
