Trump Administration Releases Plans for 250-Foot Triumphal Arch

The Trump administration released final plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, though documents omit military features previously cited by the president.

The Donald Trump administration has released final plans for a 250-foot-tall triumphal arch to be constructed in a traffic circle near the Memorial Bridge, situated between Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia. The structure is intended as a ceremonial gateway adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and Reagan National Airport.

While President Trump asserted in September that the arch would serve as a "top grade Military Complex" housing drones, snipers, and ammunition, the final documents submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission omit these features. The United States Department of the Interior maintains that the design remains capable of accommodating these national security functions and claims that specific details are being withheld from the public. The National Park Service further justified the structure's scale as a celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary.

The project faces significant opposition from lawmakers, veterans, and historic preservationists. Representative Don Beyer warned that placing a weapons cache near major commuter thoroughfares and the Metro Blue Line would create safety risks. Other critics argue the arch would obstruct symbolic sightlines between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

The United States Commission of Fine Arts has approved the plans, and the National Capital Planning Commission has granted preliminary approval. A final review hearing is scheduled for November 5, while U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan considers a lawsuit seeking to block construction.
