UK Government Allocates £250 Million to Protect Jewish Communities

The UK government is investing over £250 million over three years to deploy 500 additional police officers to combat rising antisemitic hate crimes.

The Government of the United Kingdom announced an investment of more than £250 million over the next three years to enhance policing and protection for Jewish communities across England and Wales. The funding follows a surge in antisemitic hate crimes and violent attacks, including a car ramming and stabbing at a synagogue in Heaton Park, Manchester, and a terrorist stabbing in Golders Green, London. These incidents contributed to the national terror threat level being raised to severe.

The package will deploy over 500 additional officers, with approximately 300 stationed in London and 80 in Greater Manchester. Financial allocations include £86 million for the Metropolitan Police to bolster community protection teams and £59 million for Counter-Terrorism Police to address state threats. The initiative also supports Project Servator, deploying specialist plain-clothes officers to synagogues, schools, and community centers, alongside national policing coordination and training.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that tackling antisemitism has been central to his leadership. The move was welcomed by the Community Security Trust and the Board of Deputies of British Jews, with officials describing the increased support as critical for the future of British Jews.
