Amazon to Refund Customers After $600 Million Tariff Recovery

Amazon.com Inc. will issue partial refunds to customers after receiving $600 million in government tariff repayments following a Supreme Court ruling.

Amazon.com Inc. confirmed during its July 31, 2026, second-quarter earnings call that it received approximately $600 million in tariff refunds from the federal government. These repayments follow a February 2026 Supreme Court of the United States decision in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, which ruled that certain tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act exceeded presidential authority.

Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky stated that the company will proactively contact and automatically issue refunds to a limited set of customers where specific import charges can be traced. He noted that the company largely absorbed tariff costs or used strategic inventory stockpiling, and that Amazon is not the importer of record for the majority of items sold because third-party sellers account for over 60% of products. Any remaining funds will be used to invest in lower prices for customers.

The company currently faces a class-action lawsuit in Seattle alleging it delayed seeking these refunds to curry favor with Donald Trump, who previously suggested he would remember companies that refrained from pursuing the money. Simultaneously, Donald Trump has implemented new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries, citing forced labor concerns to justify their legality.
