Cockroach Janta Party Forces India Education Minister's Resignation

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a Gen Z-led movement that began as online satire, forced the July 25 resignation of India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The unrest was triggered by the cancellation of a national medical entrance exam after a paper leak affected approximately two million students, which subsequently expanded into a broader protest against chronic youth unemployment and government transparency.

Led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, the movement organized a 36-day nationwide protest that culminated in tens of thousands of young people marching toward Parliament in New Delhi. Despite government responses involving police batons and pellet guns, the movement punctured the aura of invincibility surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, the Indian government established a panel to review the examination system and supported stricter legal penalties for leaks.

Prime Minister Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party have since adjusted their outreach to Gen Z by adopting youth slang and short-form digital campaigns. Meanwhile, the CJP has declined to merge with existing opposition parties or enter electoral politics. Abhijeet Dipke stated the movement will instead operate as a public watchdog and pressure group, focusing on consulting Gen Z to form an agenda that restores trust and accountability in national institutions.
