United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Advocates for National Wealth Tax

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby called for a national wealth tax and inheritance taxes nearing 100% to combat societal wealth inequality.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby called for the implementation of a national wealth tax and inheritance taxes that approach 100% for certain estates. In an interview with The New York Times, Kirby argued that wealth inequality has become a danger to society and must be addressed through a nationwide approach to prevent wealthy individuals from relocating to different states to avoid payment.

Kirby characterized his views as a nonconsensus opinion rather than formal policy advocacy. He argued the current system is unfair because wealthy individuals accumulate passive income and investment growth without taxes, while traditional earners face rates up to 40%. He suggested taxing wealth growth while lowering income taxes would create a fairer system, noting he would be willing to pay such taxes himself.

The comments drew criticism from the Governor of Louisiana, who called the stance audacious given Kirby's annual compensation of approximately $32.3 million. Commentator Glenn Beck also stated he would no longer fly with United Airlines. Kirby dismissed the criticism, stating he is not a politician and expressed a desire for national discourse on the national deficit and national service.

These remarks coincide with a November vote in California on a proposed billionaire tax. While Google cofounder Sergey Brin donated $102 million to oppose the measure, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed a willingness to pay billions in taxes if the law passes, describing the ability to do so as a privilege.
