DHS Secretary Mullin Condemns Biden-Era Visa Overstay Failures

Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the Biden administration after a DHS report revealed ICE failed to act on 3 million visa overstay leads.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned the Biden administration's handling of visa overstays following a report from the DHS Office of Inspector General. The watchdog report found that between fiscal years 2021 and 2024, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) received over 3.1 million leads regarding visa overstays but classified 96.7 percent of them as non-priority.

Despite identifying more than 100,000 individuals as potential national security or public safety threats, the administration launched only 496 investigations, which resulted in eight arrests. The report attributes this lack of enforcement to a September 2021 directive that limited resources to Priority 1 leads.

Secretary Mullin described the previous administration's actions as a "dereliction of duty" that put American lives at risk. He cited specific cases of overstays who allegedly committed violent crimes, including a stabbing in Florida, animal torture in Nevada, and sexual assault in Texas.
