Delhi Police Detain Rahul Gandhi After Election Commission Protest
Indian National Congress leaders and MPs were detained in New Delhi after staging a sit-in protest against the Election Commission of India.
Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and approximately 250 other Indian National Congress leaders and MPs on Tuesday night following an eight-hour sit-in protest at Akashvani Bhawan in New Delhi. The demonstration was part of a Save Democracy campaign targeting the Election Commission of India over alleged electoral roll irregularities and vote theft.
The protest began after police blocked a march of over 200 Members of Parliament toward the Nirvachan Sadan. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and other leaders demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging the commission has functioned as a B-team for the Bharatiya Janata Party. While Congress MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring defended the legality of the sit-in, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the opposition of attempting to spread anarchy.
Police eventually forcibly removed the protesters and transported them to the Kingsway Camp police lines. During the detention, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra climbed over a gate at the police line to reach other leaders. The detainees, including around 50 MPs, were released shortly after 10 pm.
