Mark Warner Warns Trump Policies Damage US-India Relations

Senator Mark Warner, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned that aggressive trade policies and visa uncertainties are undermining the strategic relationship between the United States and India. Warner described a 50 percent tariff on India as "crazy" and unfair, suggesting the trade conflict is driven by Donald Trump's ego rather than reason. He noted that these tensions, combined with India's recent trade deal with the European Union and the lack of a corresponding U.S. agreement, could push New Delhi to seek closer ties with Russia and China.

Warner also criticized the Trump administration's handling of the H-1B visa program. He specifically cited a proposed $100,000 fee, noting that while the administration called it a one-time charge, the implementation details remain unclear. While Warner acknowledged the need for reform to prevent some companies from using the program for labor arbitrage, he defended the critical role of skilled foreign talent in the U.S. economy.

Emphasizing that India has arrived as a mature global player, Warner cautioned that punitive policies risk breaking trust that is difficult to repair. He stated that the Senate India Caucus continues to work toward stabilizing ties, but noted that the current state of the bilateral relationship is not as good as it should be given its importance as a counterweight to China.
