Meta Considers Selling AI Compute Power via Cloud Business
Meta Platforms is exploring the launch of an AI cloud business to sell excess compute capacity to third parties to offset massive infrastructure spending.
Meta Platforms is considering the launch of an AI cloud business to sell excess compute power to third parties. Founder Mark Zuckerberg stated that other AI companies have expressed interest in purchasing access to the company's compute capacity at a premium.
This potential shift follows a significant increase in capital expenditures, with the company expecting to spend between 130 billion and 145 billion dollars this year. These investments are primarily directed toward AI frontier research and inference capacity.
While the move could create a new revenue stream, analysts suggest it may indicate a struggle to find sufficient internal use cases for the infrastructure. They further note a failure to monetize AI services directly, as Meta's chatbots currently hold minimal market share compared to competitors such as OpenAI and Alphabet.
