Germany and Poland Sign Defense Pact to Secure Eastern Flank

Germany and Poland signed a defense agreement in Warsaw to enhance military mobility, cyber defense, and Baltic Sea security amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

Germany and Poland signed an inter-ministerial defense agreement on June 17, 2026, in Warsaw to strengthen military cooperation and security on Europe's eastern flank. The pact focuses on practical cooperation in cyber defense, military mobility, infrastructure, and new technologies, specifically aimed at protecting the Baltic Sea region and accelerating the deployment of NATO forces. A key component of the deal is the Grand Eagle exercise in November, which will see 1,200 German soldiers move through Poland to Lithuania. The agreement also allows German personnel to assist in the development of Poland's Eastern Shield fortifications.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish Defense Minister, signed the pact alongside German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. While the deal reaffirms EU and NATO obligations, it lacks the formal political mutual defense guarantees found in Poland's treaties with France and the United Kingdom. This omission stems from domestic political sensitivities in Poland regarding World War II reparations and expected opposition from President Karol Nawrocki.

The agreement follows criticism from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding Warsaw's exclusion from high-level security talks in London. Both nations cited Russian aggression and hybrid threats as primary drivers for the pact, which coincides with the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Treaty of Good Neighborship. Germany views the partnership as a way to revitalize the Bundeswehr, while Poland seeks to solidify its role as a regional military power and logistics hub for Ukraine.
