Hinson and Turek Locked in Dead Heat for Iowa Senate Seat
Republican Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek are competing in a closely contested race for an open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa.
Republican Representative Ashley Hinson and Democratic state representative Josh Turek are locked in a dead heat for an open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa. The seat became available after incumbent Senator Joni Ernst decided not to seek re-election. The race is a critical component of the broader battle for control of the U.S. Senate, where Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority.
Turek, a former Paralympic medalist, is campaigning as a moderate and focusing on voter frustration regarding tariffs, high gas prices, and the war in Iran. Hinson enters the contest with superior funding and name recognition, though she faces the challenge of balancing her image with that of Donald Trump, who has held rallies in the state to boost Republican turnout.
Polling remains mixed as the November 3 election approaches. A New York Times/Sienna poll from late October showed Turek leading 48% to 47%, while an Emerson poll from early September placed Hinson ahead 50% to 45%. Other surveys from Marist, YouGov, and the Trafalgar Group show varying leads for both candidates. Total spending in the race has reached $260 million, with Democrats outspending Republicans on advertising throughout October.
