Trump Considers National Emergency to Mandate Voter ID or Cancel Midterms

President Donald Trump is weighing an executive order to declare a national voting emergency to mandate voter ID or potentially cancel the 2026 midterm elections.

President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections by issuing an executive order declaring a national voting emergency. This proposed order would seek to mandate voter ID requirements regardless of Congressional approval, a move that would contradict Article I of the Constitution. The legal strategy is being pushed by activists and lawyers, including Jerome Corsi and Peter Ticktin, who cite alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 election as the basis for the emergency. This effort coincides with a recent FBI raid in Fulton County, Georgia, orchestrated by Trump's director of election security and integrity, Kurt Olsen, to seize 2020 ballots.

Parallel to these legal maneuvers, Trump has suggested that the 2026 midterms could be canceled if the United States were engaged in a war. These comments followed military strikes initiated by his administration against Iran. While Trump claimed the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon within two weeks, Senator Ted Cruz stated he had no intelligence indicating Iran was close to that goal.

The administration's actions have drawn criticism from both political allies and election experts. Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized the strikes against Iran and acknowledged the possibility of a manufactured crisis being used to avoid elections. Meanwhile, David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation and Research maintained that the president lacks the legal authority to cancel midterms, as elections are managed at the state and local levels.
