Restrictive Western Policies Limit Influence of Indian Diaspora

The Indian diaspora faces increasing immigration and trade restrictions in the United States, Canada, and Australia despite significant economic success and professional achievements.

The global Indian diaspora, totaling approximately 37 million people, is facing a period of diminished influence and mobility due to restrictive policies in Western nations. While the community has achieved substantial professional success, particularly in the United States, recent geopolitical shifts have created new barriers for Indian nationals.

Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party have historically leveraged the success of non-resident Indians to secure political donations and advance India's national interests. However, this reliance on the diaspora highlights a systemic failure in talent retention within India. A 2023 study found that 62% of the top 100 scorers from the 2010 Indian Institutes of Technology entrance exam now reside abroad.

Recent actions by the United States government have further strained these dynamics. The Trump administration suspended several technology firms from sponsoring permanent residency following allegations of immigration fraud, and the U.S. Congress passed legislation enabling 100% tariffs on India for its continued purchase of Russian oil. Simultaneously, Canada and Australia have implemented restrictions on student visas for Indian migrants. Although remittances from the diaspora account for 4% of India's GDP, the community has been unable to persuade Western governments to adopt policies more favorable to India.
