Bola Tinubu Wins APC Nomination for 2027 Presidential Election

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the All Progressives Congress nomination for the 2027 election after winning a nationwide direct primary with nearly 11 million votes.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination for the 2027 general election, winning 10,999,162 votes in a landslide victory. He defeated his sole challenger, businessman Stanley Osifo, who polled 16,503 votes. The process, held on May 23, 2026, marked the first time a Nigerian party adopted a direct primary model for a presidential nomination, conducting votes across 8,809 wards in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Following the collation of results on May 24 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, Tinubu received the party's flag and Certificate of Return. In his acceptance speech, he framed the upcoming election as a referendum on his administration's economic and institutional reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments. He pledged to maintain an irreversible path of economic expansion and called for constitutional amendments to establish state police to combat insecurity.

While APC governors and allies praised the high voter turnout as a demonstration of internal democracy, the process faced criticism. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar alleged the results were fabricated and merely written. Additionally, some reports cited irregularities, including ghost elections in Gombe and protests in Adamawa and Lagos. Despite these challenges, Tinubu extended an olive branch to political critics, emphasizing that democracy is sustained by a diversity of ideas.
