China and North Korea Strengthen Ties During Treaty Anniversary Visit
Wang Huning led a high-level Chinese delegation to Pyongyang to commemorate a mutual defense treaty and implement strategic agreements reached between Xi Jinping and Kim Jong-un.
Chinese official Wang Huning led a party and government delegation to Pyongyang from July 15 to 17, 2026, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. The visit followed a June state visit by President Xi Jinping to North Korea and a recent trip to Beijing by North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song, signaling a period of intensified diplomatic contact.
During the visit, Wang held talks with Workers' Party Secretary Jo Yong-won and met with leader Kim Jong-un on July 17. Both sides committed to implementing a strategic blueprint established in June, focusing on expanding political, economic, and cultural cooperation. Jo Yong-won emphasized the need for "militant unity, support and solidarity" given the current international climate, while Wang reaffirmed China's commitment to elevate bilateral ties.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Wang and Pak Thae-song attended a reception in Pyongyang where they emphasized the treaty's role in consolidating mutual trust and regional security. The delegation also visited a Korean War memorial, a party cadre training school, and the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. These engagements aim to reinforce China's influence over North Korea as Pyongyang continues to expand its military ties with Russia.
