UAE and Israel Investigate Flydubai Flight Diversion to Saudi Arabia

The United Arab Emirates and Israel are investigating a midair altercation on a flydubai flight that forced an emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia.

The United Arab Emirates has ordered a specialized Public Prosecution team to investigate a midair emergency aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a violent altercation occurred in the flight deck. While flydubai initially reported a general altercation requiring crew intervention, Israeli authorities are investigating the event as an attempt to crash the aircraft.

Reports indicate that the pilot, Smit Machha, opened the cockpit door to seek help from passengers after being stabbed by the co-pilot. The aircraft transmitted emergency squawk codes 7700 and 7500, which triggered security alerts and the scrambling of Israeli fighter jets. Five passengers helped overpower the co-pilot and secure the aircraft before it landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced national civilian bravery awards for the passengers, stating they prevented a major disaster. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed one of the recipients, Yaniv Hayun, upon his return to Ben Gurion Airport. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted judicial jurisdiction over the case because the aircraft is registered in the UAE, and the investigation will specifically examine potential links to terrorist activity or prior planning.
